OLD BUSINESS

The status of the Chapter 202 banner was discussed.  It was determined that the size, cost and availability of the banner was still to be determined.  Gene Walters, W2CP is to be contacted regarding whether a banner could be obtained to serve as the pattern.

NEW BUSINESS

It was noted that the following are Life Members of QCWA Chapter 202.

Buddy Smith - W4YE
Joe "OBIE" Price-O’Brien - WA4DOX
Fred Fraley - W4DF
Bill Svec - WA4BKW
Jack Blake - KE4OAL

Life Member Certificates had been printed by Stan Reas, K4UK for presentation to these members.  President Bill Svec presented Buddy Smith with his certificate.  And Buddy Smith in turn presented Bill Svec with his certificate.  The other three certificates were given to Bob Dixon for safe keeping until the next meeting.  It was decided that if the other three members are not present at the next meeting that their certificates will be mailed to them.

Buddy Smith and Stan Reas contacted the FCC and had the W5KL call of Buddy’s father Leland Smith Sr. assigned to QCWA Chapter #202 as a club call.  Buddy presented a hat from the Cleveland, Ohio QCWA Chapter #1 to Stan as a token of his appreciation for his help in obtaining his father’s call assigned to the Chapter.  Buddy is the custodian of the call and wishes to be personally contacted by Chapter members before the W5KL call is activated for Chapter use.

Buddy presented a list of some pieces of ham radio gear from the estate of his father, W5KL.

It was moved by Bill Svec and seconded by Stan Reas that $36.60 be sent to Charlie Beckwith, K4BSF for reimbursement of Chapter related expenses.  The motion was approved.

Phil Roark paid Bob Dixon Treasurer of QCWA Chapter #202 $10.00 for dues covering 01-04 to 12-05.

Bill Svec discussed the radio clubs at William Bird High School and William Bird Middle School in Roanoke.  He noted that the ARRL will be giving up to $5000 worth of equipment to the two radio clubs.  He also asked that members contact the clubs and attend meetings if possible to bolster interest and activity in the clubs.  He further asked that members of QCWA Chapter 202 actively seek out local High School student hams to apply for the QCWA college scholarships.

Bill Svec pointed out that the U.S./Canadian QCWA convention will be held in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada on 15-16-17 October, 2004 and encouraged members to attend.  He listed some of the seminars that will be held at the convention.  Bill also, as luck would have it, has to attend his son’s wedding that weekend and can’t go.

Stan Reas discussed problems with finding space near or on the D-Day site for operation on June 6, 2004.  For security reasons Chapter #202 will not be allowed to operate from the site.  The cost of $100 to rent Liberty Lake Park for the day was considered prohibitive.  It was decided to have individual members operate from their homes.  Buddy Smith took a list of operators, frequencies and modes.  Operation is to commence on June 6, 2004 at 0000Z (8 P.M. EDT Friday June 5) and continue for the 24 hour period to end at 2400Z (8.P.M EDT) Saturday June 6.  It was noted that there may be as many as 6 special event stations operating from the U.K. and France on June 6, 2004.

Operation of WW2DDM from the D-Day Memorial site on July 24, 2004 was discussed.  This is the scheduled “Family Day” and they would like to have vintage WW2 electronic equipment to display on that date.  Stan Reas will follow up and advise particulars concerning this operation.

Bill Svec discussed the possibility of obtaining a vinyl banner about eight (8) feet long to be hung over the operating position at Chapter events.  It was suggested that the banner read:

AMATEUR RADIO STATION WW2DDM

Bill suggested that Bob Dixon contact the sheltered workshop in Bedford and determine if such a banner could be obtained from them.  An amount of $50.00 was approved to cover the costs of this banner.  If the cost exceeds this amount Bob is to contact Bill Svec for approval before ordering the banner.

Larry Stanecker noted that the Lynchburg Amateur Radio Club will be operating a special event call sign, N4B, commemorating the 250th anniversary of the town/city of Bedford, Virginia.  Operation will be from individual members homes on 28, 29 and 30 May of 2004.  Operation on 31 May, 2004 will be from the Wachovia parking lot in downtown Bedford.  Operation will be on the following frequencies and modes, conditions and operators permitting:

40 meters

20 meters

2 meters

Phil Roark announced that the Roanoke Valley Amateur Radio Club will be holding its swap and shop on July 31, 2004 at William Bird High School in Roanoke, Virginia.  A table for the Chapter has been reserved.

Stan Reas brought an album of QSL cards sent to WW2DDM to illustrate the extent of activity by our chapter callsign.

Bill Svec announced that the next meeting will be in August at the home of Stan and Carolyn Reas at their home on Smith Mountain Lake.  The date to be established by Stan and Carolyn.  It will be a “pot-luck” dinner as in previous years.  Buddy Smith said he will bring a piece of 2 meter gear to be auctioned off at that meeting.  Proceeds to go to QCWA Chapter #202.

The meeting was adjourned at 11:15 AM.
