QCWA - Old Dominion Chapter 202
Chapter Meeting - May 3, 2003

The chapter held a breakfast (brunch) meeting in Bedford, Virginia on May 3, 2003, at the Golden Corral Restaurant. Eleven Old Dominion Chapter 202 members and three guests were present.

President Bill Svec, WA4BKW, opened the meeting at 10:50 AM and welcomed all who came out on this rainy morning. In the absence of Charlie Beckwith, K4BSF, he called on Stan Reas, K4UK, to read the minutes of the March 8, 2003 meeting held in Lynchburg. The minutes were approved as read.

Stan also read the Treasurer's report, which shows a balance of $ 307.76. He advised that Charlie wished to have the audit done on the books. It was agreed that the audit would be done immediately after the meeting by a committee consisting of Bill Svec, Gene Walter and Stan Reas. Charlie's $17.94 expense for announcements was approved.

OBIE, WA4DOX, advised the chapter that he did not want to be an officer, but would accept the post of "Webmaster". He discussed his ideas for expanding the web site and asked for help from the members in providing "Bio Data" and stories. Stan, K4UK, moved that the post of "Webmaster" be created and that OBIE be appointed to that post. Gene, W2CP, seconded and the motion was passed unanimously.

Stan Reas, K4UK, received a 50th anniversary Award certificate. Sam Vance, W4BUD, requested we send his 50th Anniversary Award certificate by USPS since he would be unable to attend. Fred Fraley, W4DF, and George Guill, W4VAN, are due their 50th and 70th, respectively but were not in attendance. We will attempt to make the presentation at the June meeting.

Bob Dixon, W8HGH, brought up expanding the information on the chapter call sign, WW2DDM on QRZ Web Site. He suggested that a picture of the Special Event QSL card and additional "Bio Info" be included. Bill Perkins, KC4D moved that we proceed with this. John Bush, W4FOD seconded and the motion was approved. OBIE volunteered to follow through on this and Stan will send him a copy of the QSL card.

Bill Svec advised that all present officers had agreed to serve another year. So the slate presented was approved unanimously. The officers will be:

President

Vice President

Secretary/Treasurer

Directors:

Larry Stanecker, WA2OLP advised that the Lynchburg Virginia Amateur Radio Club was offering Amateur Radio classes.

The possible operation of a Special Event Station on June 7 at the D-Day Memorial was discussed. Stan Reas is to investigate whether the station could be set up at the Memorial site. Bill Svec suggested that the next meeting be scheduled for June 7 again at the Golden Corral in Bedford at 9 AM. After breakfast the members could operate the special event station. Bob Dixon reserved the date with the management.

Bill suggested that the August meeting again be a pot-luck dinner, held at Stan's QTH at Smith Mountain Lake. Stan will check with his wife to establish the date.

John Bush then showed us the re-created Spark Gap rig that was his first radio. John lived in Kansas at the time and he and a friend built identical rigs. They had a great time communicating with each other across a distance of 700 feet. That is until a visit from a gentleman who wanted to know whether John and his friend knew about Leavenworth. Seems their radios were causing totally unacceptable interference throughout the area. So John and his friend had to dismantle the radios and stay off the air.

OBIE took a picture of this radio and will have it posted on the Old Dominion Chapter 202 Website. He then showed his "home built" straight key and paddle, which perform adequately well.

The meeting was adjourned at noon after which the members sat around and chatted about Ham Radio for another hour or so and checked out the mobile installations of some of the members.

Respectfully submitted,

Stan Reas

Acting Secretary, Old Dominion Chapter # 202 - QCWA
