Thirty-one miles of the Blue Ridge Parkway follow along Floyd County's eastern border.  The Parkway was built after the Great Depression to make jobs for engineers, architects, and local mountain people.  The parkway spans from the Shenandoah National Park to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park along the southern Appalachian mountains of Virginia and North Carolina.

We would be remiss if we did not mention the New River, which by no means represents its name.  The New River is part of one of the oldest river systems in the world.  It flows northward from North Carolina through Virginia and West Virginia into the Kanawha and Ohio rivers.  These two facts alone make it well worth reading about, let alone its beauty and recreational benefits.

Virginia also has a very active horse industry welcoming many diverse breeds and disciplines.  It is home for nine AVA vaulting clubs and many therapeutic facilities using vaulting techniques in their programs.
